Additional Property Attributes

This property has been a fueling station since the 1950s. The property consists of the DX station as well as a former parlor building and a residence, but only the DX station is included in the OCC's assessments (due to jurisdiction over petroleum storage tanks). The DX station itself was featured in the 1983 film The Outsiders, and remains a tourist attraction for this reason. The man who currently owns it is working with Upward Sperry, a nonprofit organization dedicated to economic development in Sperry--including leveraging the DX's fame to further tourism in Sperry. In addition, the City of Sperry has received an INCOG (the area's economic development agency) grant to upgrade their sewer line, and it was the subsurface prep work for the sewer line work that uncovered hydrocarbons in the soil near the DX--which kicked off the Oklahoma Corporation Commission's involvement. The OCC worked with the ODEQ, the City of Sperry, and the landowner to get the petroleum issues at this site addressed so that the City could move forward with their sewer line project and the owner and Upward Sperry could move forward with their plans to bring the DX station back to its former glory. The Phase I Assessment took a little over a week (12/3/2020 to 12/14/2020) and the Phase II took about 4 months (3/30/2021 to 7/25/2021).

During the Phase II, TPH GRO and DRO were found, but below risk-based levels as determined by OCC PSTD.

Redevelopment is ongoing.
