Additional Property Attributes

$72k anticipated costs - Located near the town of Twisp, Washington, in Okanogan County, the Red Shirt Mill processed ore, from the Red Shirt Mine, for approximately two years in the late 1930s. Mill operations consisted of crushing and grinding ore, and separating target minerals through flotation. This process produced an orange colored fine-grained sediment waste containing metals (e.g., lead, arsenic, copper, zinc, mercury, etc.) and cyanide. Mill waste contains toxic metals that are harmful to human health and the environment at increased concentrations. Much of the mill waste lays within the Methow River flood plan. Flooding has buried portions of the mill waste while exposing other portions. In 2002, Science Applications International Corporation performed a Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study. Contamination above the established cleanup levels occurred in the upland and near shore soils. An emergency action performed by Ecology included removal of the mill building and removal of contaminated soil near the building.
