Additional Property Attributes

This property located at 155 East Park Central is now part of The History Museum on The Square and open to the public in the heart of downtown Springfield. It was purchased in 2014, by the museum, following the Phase I due diligence provided under this grant. Previously it was the office of Sherwood Law, whose owners were Devon Sherwood, Richard and Kathryn Bender, and Susan Applequist. The property is a two story (formerly commercial office building) with a basement with a total of 5,800 square feet. It was constructed in 1914 and the site has been developed since the late 1800's with various commercial and office uses. Assessment activities and a lead and asbestos inspection identified asbestos pipe insulation and roofing materials as well as lead paint in the basement, all of which were removed during demolition activities to prepare for redevelopment and paid for through the museum funded primarily by private donations.
The building is part of the History Museum on The Square open seven days a week with interactive exhibits and meeting space. HistoryMuseumOnTheSquare.org
