Additional Property Attributes

The site was formerly used by CSX Corporation as a rail line for transportation of coal from the Clear Fork area to rail corridor connections and associated markets. The +15-mile rail line was reportedly last used prior to the 1990s. The abandoned rail corridor is now owned by the Raleigh County Commission. Railroad tracks have been removed from the rail corridor. Future plans include transforming the former rail corridor into a rail trail.

Potential contamination of rail lines can originate from multiple sources. Leaching of potential chemicals, including petroleum constituents, associated with preservation processes used on wooden railroad ties, diesel fuel spills/leaks from trains operating on the rail line, petroleum-based fluids used for engine maintenance, and herbicide use for weed and plant control as part of rail line maintenance are all potential sources of contamination.
