Additional Property Attributes

In 1909, the Arizona legislature passed a law to segregate the Arizona school system by race for grades 1 through 8. In 1912 the segregated school for black children moved to the subject property and was named after Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Dunbar school also provided space for community activities. The site still houses a school today and serves as an African American Arts & Cultural Center. In 2018, the site was registered in the National Register of Historic Places with local significance. The site is comprised of a 2.51 acre parcel that houses two buildings. Building 1 is an approximate 55,897 square foot, two-story building with a basement located on the northwest portion of the site. The building was originally constructed in 1949 with an add-on (south-central portion of the building) constructed between the late 1950 and early 1970s. Building 2 is an approximate 15,115 square foot, single-story building with a basement located on the northeast portion of the site. The building was originally constructed in 1918 with add-ons constructed in 1921, 1930, 1936, and 1940. The two buildings require restoration and redevelopment. The City of Tucson, Housing and Community Development Department, has applied for HUD funding to help the Dunbar Association to restore part of the western building. The site lies upgradient of a historic automotive repair facility.
