Additional Property Attributes

The 1.44-acre Boiler House property is improved with a multi-story brick and wood-d structure that was formerly used as the boiler and coal house that provided steam power to other buildings in the adjacent 61-acre millyard. The property abuts the Nashua River and is located within the Broad Street Parkway corridor, a planned 2-mile, 4-lane parkway. The building's stack is a prominent visual marker in the City's skyline. The structure contains two distinct sections, the boiler house itself, and a coal storage room which was later retrofitted to contain six 30,000 gallon ASTs which formerly held fuel oil. A significant amount of asbestos is found around process pipes and in boiler insulation. Former Use: The Boiler House is located in a 61-acre mill complex that was formerly part of the Nashua Manufacturing Company, a cotton textile manufacturer that operated from 1823 to 1945. The first mill building was constructed in 1825, and production began the following year. Originally, the mills that comprised the Nashua Manufacturing Company operated solely on waterpower. In 1860, a boiler and coal house the subject of this proposal was constructed, which contained six coal-fired boilers. In 1881, as greater demands were placed on steam power, the Boiler House underwent an expansion and renovation. 1 In 1945, Textron Corporation purchased the Nashua Manufacturing Company, and the Nashua mills were closed in 1949. Until the 1970?s, the mill complex remained vacant, when an urban renewal project demolished several mill outbuildings. During the late 1980?s, many of the former mill buildings on the complex were redeveloped into residential, commercial and light industrial space. The City obtained the property in 1991 through back taxes. Demolition of the Boiler House was completed in 2012.
