Additional Property Attributes

The subject property, previously used as a pesticide formulation plant, has been the subject of several federal and local investigations, including an EPA Superfund removal action. During the removal action the property was remediated to industrial cleanup standards. However the building has fallen into disrepair and access to the building is unrestricted. The remedial measures implemented by EPA during the removal action have been vandalized, and contaminated media is exposed to human contact and the elements. The local health department has reportedly attempted to contact the property owner without success. The property is impeding the redevelopment of the North Omaha Redevelopment District, located just north of Omaha's new QWEST center and the Gallup Executive University campus. NDEQ's efforts at the property are complicated by an inability to obtain property access. NDEQ is working with the City of Omaha and EPA to provide the City with Section 128(a) funding to allow the City to conduct a Phase II site assessment under their existing authority. The goal of the phase II investigation will be to assess residual contamination in the soil and water on the property and to collect samples from inside the building to allow the city to evaluate appropriate waste management options in the even that the building is razed. (PPF - 9/18/06)

Former Use: The subject property was largely undeveloped until 1917, when Deep Rock Oil Corporation of Nebraska was established and the building currently located on the property was constructed. In 1953, Deep Rock Oil Corporation sold the property to Maroba Company, and in 1973, Maroba Company sold the property to Economy Products. Economy Products used the four-story building located on the subject property for the formulation and storage of pesticides. The City of Omaha ordered the facility closed in 1982, and the proprety has been unoccupied since. The City of Omaha Planning Department took ownership of the property in 2015. The nuisance structure has since been demolished and future use of the site is unknown. The City might sell it to interested developers with limitations on the type of use.
