Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The U.S. Army set up a military post in Saint Michael in 1897 to keep order in what was then a gold rush boom town. Before the military base was established, the U.S. government had a weather station, school, and post office at the property. The U.S. Army occupied Fort Saint Michael from 1897 to 1925. Between 1925 and 1963 no information is available as to occupants or activities on the property. After Statehood in 1959, the State of Alaska owned the property, which was used by the Department of Transportation as an airstrip from 1963 to 1997. In 1997 the property was transferred by quitclaim deed from the State of Alaska to the City of Saint Michael. The old airstrip runs north-south through the center of the property, which is crossed by an old military tramline. An abandoned landfill and a barrel and battery dumpsite are located on the west side of the north end of the airstrip. Some tar pits and tar-stained areas are located at the south end of the property; these were the main areas of concern for the assessment because soil samples collected from tar stained areas in 2000 contained levels of DRO that exceeded DEC cleanup levels.
