Additional Property Attributes

The site is located in a National Historic District and is a central part of a downtown revitalization plan for the City of St. Albans. Historical uses of the property include a foundry and an auto dealership and garages. Also, a significant fire destroyed several buidlings within the city block in the late 1800s.

Former Use: The site consists of a parking lot comprised of five parcels and is located in the center of a city block bordered by Federal St., Kingman St., Lake, St., and North Main St. Historic site uses include flask yard (1896), foundary-machine shop (1912), and auto house/garage/repair (1926-1959). The site was converted to a parking area in ~1959. Historic research completed on behalf of the owner noted that 27-33 Federal Street were originally two properties: 27-29 Federal Street and 31-33 Federal Street. The buildings are now functionally and legally one property. Most recently, the building housed the Brickhouse Tavern on the ground floor and apartments on the upper floors, but it has been vacant since ~May 2007. Historical uses of the property include carriage paints shop, confectionery and tobacco shop, tailor, and sheet metal shop. In addition, an 1895 fire reportedly destroyed all of the buildings on the block in which the site is located. Prior to the City's purchase of the property, it was owned for three years by three individuals.
