Additional Property Attributes

The former Safety Disposal System SDS properties are located adjacent to the former SDS Incinerator. SDS utilized the properties to store trailers and biohazard containers and medical waste. A portion of the property was utilized as a vehicle repair facility. In addition, several monitoring wells are located on the property for delineation of an off-site industrial facility plume. These properties have recently been cleared. The Town of Hampton has taking ownership of the properties by eminent domain. In addition, a soil removal work plan has been submitted and approved by South Carolina DHEC. The work plan calls for the removal of approximately 865 cubic yards of metals lead, chromium, and arsenic impacted soils. This was the only cleanup required by South Carolina. The town is currently in the process of applying for a grant from the South Carolina Revolving Loan Fund to fund this required cleanup. The cleanup planning task listed above includes redevelopment plans for the proposed park.

Former Use: Portions of the subject site were first developed prior to 1957 with three residential properties. In the 1970s, a truck repair facility was developed on the southern portion of the subject site and a welding shop was operated on the western portion of the subject site. After 1985, portions of the subject site were utilized as storage areas for trailers and plastic medical waste containers either awaiting incineration at the adjacent former Safety Disposal Systems SDS Medical Waste Incinerator formerly operated by Southland and Chambers Medical Technology and/or following incineration of their contents. Several site buildings were utilized by SDS for storage or offices. The truck repair facility was operated until SDS was closed down by a SCDHEC Administrative Order in February 2002. SDS subsequently d bankruptcy. The SDS properties remained vacant for several years until late 2007 when the Town of Hampton obtained a CDBG grant to have the on-site buildings demolished.
