Additional Property Attributes

Recommendations are the following: The Site owner provide notification to MassDEP of the concentrations in soil and groundwater identified above the RCS-1 and RCGW-2 standards within 120-days of receipt of Phase II report. Collecting additional soil samples at the Site to delineate the extent of elevated metals concentrations, particularly the elevated concentrations of chromium. The total chromium standards assumes that all the detected chromium consists of hexavalent (Cr+6), and not the less toxic trivalent (Cr+3) chromium, which has a much allowable concentration than Cr+6. Therefore, additional soil sampling and analysis for Cr=6 should be performed. The installation of one to two additional groundwater monitoring wells for the purposes of determining groundwater flow direction and to evaluate the source and extent of chlorinated solvents identified in the groundwater in monitoring well MW-2.

Former Use: The Site has historically been located within the Boston & Maine Railroad Right-of-Way in downtown Ayer between Park Street and Pearl Street. The eastern portion of the site was formerly occupied by an approximate 0.15-mile segment of railroad line comprised of steel rails, wooden ties, and a gravel base. The site is comprised of a paved parking lot, while a segment of the paved rail-trail bike path occupies the eastern Site boundry extending north to south. The balance of the Site is comprised of lawn and landscaped areas, a bicycle lock-up area, and two small restroom facilities located adjacent to the bike path on the eastern portion of the Site. According to the information obtained from the Town of Ayer Assessor's Office, the Town does not recognize an official street address for the Site. The site is currently owned by the Town of Ayer and identified on Assessor's Map 26 however, a lot number has not been assigned to the Site. According to the Ayer Zoning Map identifying the general Site is currently zoned as "Downtown Business". Access to the Site is presently unrestricted and can be obtained via Groton Road located to the north.
