Additional Property Attributes

The property contained a partially demolished, uninhabitable structure where asbestos materials were exposed to the environment. The Iowa DNR had previously cited the owner for non-compliance with pre-demolition asbestos inspection and removal regulations. The asbestos was in a friable condition and the general public was exposed to this asbestos, as it was located in the center of the community's main street area. The city sought to obtain the property through eminent domain and condemnation procedures. Upon their receipt of the property, this brownfields cleanup grant provided the city with leveraged financial resources needed to get the property cleaned up. The city has backfilled the property, seeded it, and it will become a greenspace in the heart of downtown. Further improvements will include plantings, trees, and other park setting amenities. (PPF - Larry Wilson Property, 11-17-07)

Former Use: Property contained a partially demolished general retail, apartment, laundromat building built in 1900. Former owner was Larry Wilson. Obtained through eminent domain. (PPF - Larry Wilson Property, 11-17-07)
