Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The site consists of three irregulary-shaped property lots totaling approximately 3.39 acres, located in Athol, MA near the corner of Canal Street and Lumber Street. The site is currently developed with one multi-story factory building constructed in approximately 1911, as well as three separate storage buildings. The remainder of the site is occupied by paved parking areas and undeveloped, vacant land. The site is located approximately 1/2 mile west-southwest of the downtown area, and is assesses via a paved driveway that connects to Canal Street to the east. Between at least 1887 and 1900, the site was operated by numerous industrial and commercial tenants including manufacturers of cotton, blankets, building finishes, machines, paper boxes, as well as a wood shop and carriage painting shop. Between approximately 1905 and 1989, the site was solely occupied by ND Cass Company, a manufacturer of wooden toys and wooden and paper boxes. Since industrial development at the site, numerous types of oil and hazardous materials have been utilized or have likely been utilized by the former site occupants for industrial operations and heating purposes. Based on a review of historical sources, these materials include, but are not limited to gasoline, kerosene, No. 2 fuel oil, motor oil, gear lubricants, paints, glues, lacquers, and solvents. Historical research has also identified the former presence of multiple factory buildings, storage sheds, and a mill, all of which were associated with past industial site uses, and which no longer exist on-site. Since 1997, the site has been primarily occupied by John Sandblasting, a commercial sandblasting company. Severla tenants including a kitchen hood cleaning company, a wood craftsman, and a blacksmith, have since leased areas within the site building for minor commercial operations.
