Additional Property Attributes

Parcel numbers 01-514627 and 02-301093 are owned by Microdot, Inc. and parcel number 02-332123 is owned by Vulcan Valley Mould.

Former Use: The 34.6-acre Valley Mould Corporation and Microdot, Inc. properties are located at 7158 Hubbard-Masury Road, SE, Hubbard, Ohio. These parcels collectively comprise the "property", which is located northeast of downtown Hubbard and approximately 0.5-mile southeast of Interstate 80 exit # 234-A. The property is level to undulating with large piles slag and foundary sand from past waste disposal practices. Ground surface elevations range from approximately 950 feet to 931 feet msl. Three rusted and empty 5000-gallon above-ground storage tanks, several rusted 55-gallon drums, and scrap metal are present. Remaining structures from past operations include a pump house, an outfall foundation along a creek, a tunnel, and four bridges. Except for the active railroad to Ellwood Castings, no railroad tracks remain on-property. The property was used for steel mill and/or foundry operations from 1896 until the 1950s. Manufacturing operations were shifted to the current Ellwood Engineered Castings Company foundry during the 1950s. All site buildings and structures were demolished in 1971. During the early 1980s, Valley Mould constructed a coreless induction furnace. A baghouse was constructed to control airborne dust emissions from the new furnace plant. The coreless induction furnace and baghouse began operation in 1982. Slag was reportedly disposed of on-property until the blast furnace was demolished in the 1950s. Coreless induction furnace waste was also reportedly disposed on on-property, as well as spent foundry sand from 1927 through the 1980s(?) In 1993 Microdot Industries filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy with the U.S. Bankruptcy Court in the Central District of California. Ohio EPA received copies of the bankruptcy documents, and the Ohio Attorney General's Office filed for claim regarding the Valley Mould property closure. Since 1995, the property currently has been tax delinquent with unresolved environmental issues.
