Additional Property Attributes

While renovating the Mayo building in Tulsa, the contractors found an old tank in the sub basement. Apparently the building was originally on coal, then switched to fuel oil in the 1920's, and to natural gas in the 1950's. There are no records as to whether the fuel oil they burned was a refined product or, as some did in that era, they simply took crude oil and burned it. The building owners hired Petroleum Marketers Inc. to clean out the tank and fill it in place with concrete.

Former Use: It was built in 1925 by the Mayo brothers, and served as 600 room hotel. An attempted, renovation in the 1980's left the hotel vacant and missing many of its original fixtures and interior ornamentation. Abandoned for 20 years, the Mayo seemed destined for the wrecking ball until June 2001, when the Snyder family purchased it for 250,000. Since acquiring the property, the owners have initiated and completed a successful series of projects to restore the building to its former glory.
