Former Use: The General history of Main Street and adjoining properties in the late 1800s from Markham Street to Eighth Street included uses such as hotel sites, boarding houses, churches, cotton warehouses, wagon yards, liveries, gambling halls, undertakers, residential dwellings, and retail facilities including hardware stores, grocery stores, drug stores, and bakeries). At the turn of the century, this area remained commercial which was dominated by printing facilities, but also included banking facilities, hotels, theatres, dry cleaners, auto repair, and retail facilities. In the 1930's through the 1970's, an abundance of filling stations were located along Scott Street. The filling stations began to phase out in the downtown Main Street area in the late 1970's. From the 1970's to the present, commercial buildings, retail stores, churches and parking lots have occupied from main, Scott, and Louisiana Streets in the study area. The Main Street Corridor from Eight Street to Eleventh Street served predominately as residential property from the late 1800's to the early 1900's, however, there were exceptions; retail shops, undertakers, a fire station, a cornice works shop, and churches also occupied this area. Eighth Street thorugh Eleventh Street remained residential up to the early 1970's then progressed into commercial property
