Additional Property Attributes

The Refueling Area is north of Milwaukee Ave. & West of the active BNSF mainline in Deer Lodge, MT and is 24 acres bordered by the Clark Fork River w and Cottonwood Creek n. Activities included refueling and passenger loading for the majority of the 20th century. Fueling facilities included above- and below-ground storge tanks, ancillary piping systems, pump house, warehouse, oil sump, coal house, oil house and a drainage ditch. The City of Deer Lodge is working to develop a redevelopment plan for the property. Current plans include an extension of the recreational trail running through county property north to the Grant Kohrs Ranch, part of the National Park System. The City also plans to continue to use a portion of the property to house the City of Deer Lodge maintenance shop, the City public water supply pump house, and livestock corrals. The property is also currently utilized by the City of Deer Lodge for stockpiling of road maintenance materials such as sand, gravel, road mix, and dirt, along with storage of utility poles and sewer and water piping. In the future some of this property may be developed as a public park surrounding the proposed trail system. The open west and central sections of the property are located in the Clark Fork River flood plain and have limited development potential. Currently the City leases the property for grazing. In the future this portion may be maintained as open space along the river and continue to be used as a buffer for the river and for livestock grazing. A restoration project on Cottonwood Creek ends at the Burlington Northern trestle bordering the property to the east. Cleanup of the Passenger Refueling Area will provide additional restoration benefit for this stream. PN #E10813 - Based on a referral from the EPA Project Officer this site underwent a response action during 2011 using Oil Pollution Act Authority and therefore has a Federal Program Number of E10813.

Former Use: Property was owned by Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railway until 1985. Property transferred to CMC Real Estate Corp. Transfer to the City occurred in '86 & '00.
