Additional Property Attributes

(12/31/01 RKW/SRP) Past push-probe data has shown soil and shallow groundwater contamination on the northeast portion of the site. Gasoline, diesel, and oil-range hydrocarbons are present in soil and groundwater, both on-site and at the adjacent (upgradient) Sparks Property, which formerly housed a service station. Petroleum contamination in the northeast corner of the Bertha Triangle site could have migrated from the Sparks Property site and/or other sources. In addition, chlorinated VOCs are present in shallow groundwater at the northern edge of the site, and it is unclear whether this represents migration from Springdale Cleaners (which has reported a release of PCE, and which DEQ is investigating under its Dry Cleaner Program). Data from push-probe borings also suggest that past owners/operators may have placed 4-12 feet of fill from unknown sources onto the property. (6/6/02 RKW/SRP) In a Targeted Brownfield Assessment, DEQ installed four monitoring wells and seven soil probes throughout the site. Groundwater flow was westerly. Contamination in soil and groundwater is most concentrated in the northeast corner of the site. Most of the contamination is related to petroleum. Low concentrations of the dry-cleaning solvent PCE, and associated breakdown products, were detected along the northern boundary of the site. Low concentrations of persistent pesticides such as DDT were found in surface soils. Semivolatile organic compounds such as benzo(a)pyrene were found in surface soils and may be related to a remnant asphalt surface. Most of the contamination at the site is found near the depth of groundwater, suggesting that at least some of the contamination may have migrated to the site from off-site sources. Low concentrations of some petroleum-related compounds were found at or near the surface in one location on the east side of the site, and this may represent an on-site source area.

Former Use: Dairy farming/hay storage from 1900-1953. Bertha Station, a stop on the Red Electric rail system during the 1920s. Auto-wrecking yard and gas station in the 1930s - 1940s. Recycled newspaper storage and sanitation vehicle storage in recent times. Site History: Earliest known use of site was for a dairy with a barn, dating back at least to the 1900s. When ODOT acquired the property (1957), Fulton Park Dairy was operating at the site. A pre-acquisition appraisal done for ODOT suggested unidentified other uses in prior years, and a 1955 map labeled a "garage" building on the site. A wrecking yard and filling station occupied the site in the 1930s and '40s.
