The US EPA tasked Tetra Tech, Inc. to conduct Area-wide cleanup planning of the Southeast Chicago area under the Superfund Technical Assessment and Response Team (START) contract EP-S5-13-01, Technical Direction Document (TDD) No. S05-0003-1506-200. This project includes the area of the former hub for the steel-making industry in the Calumet Region of the City of Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. This area features many brownfields, Superfund sites, remnants of a once-vast system of vibrant wetlands, and several Illinois Natural Areas inventory sites. Area Wide Planning is being performed to transform the Calumet-area brownfields into world-class public parks. This effort will result in the development of a strategic transportation and accessibility plan which will, in turn, inform the development of the Calumet Area-Wide Brownfields Plan.

Former Use: The Project Area encompasses several brownfields sites that are prioritized for park development, including Big Marsh, Van Vlissingen Prairie, Hegewisch Marsh, Indian Ridge Marsh, Lake Calumet (Square Marsh and Western Shore), Mittal Woods, Park 566 (USX)/Park 523 (Steelworkers Park), Whitford Pond/O'Brien Lock. As the largest and most ecologically diverse of these sites, Big Marsh has been the focus of much attention regarding its potential to provide a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities and habitat types for native wildlife. Former industrial operations near the Big Marsh site have significantly altered it from its original condition. The steel industry changed the landscape by digging out several settling ponds and dumping materials that include slag, foundry sand, fly ash, construction and demolition debris, and dredged river and lake bottom sediments. The Big Marsh site is currently owned by the Chicago Park District.
