Additional Property Attributes

The Mountain Goat Trail, as being developed by the Land Trust for Tennessee, includes 3 miles of abandoned railroad right of way in Franklin County, Tennessee, and 17 miles of abandoned rail right of way in Grundy County, Tennessee. The Mountain Goat Trail Alliance and the Land Trust for Tennessee are partnering with the Tenn Department for Environment and Conservation to acquire the 20 miles of abandoned rail lines currently owned by CSX rail. The intent is to deed the Grundy portion of the site directly to the county for use as a hard-surfaced, multimodal transportation corridor. The Franklin portion will be deeded to the Mountain Goat Alliance and, subsequently, to TDEC's Division of State Parks for a biking-hiking transportation corridor.

Former Use: The Mountain Goat Trail is an abandoned railroad right of way currently owned by CSX Rail Co. The railroad was completed in 1956 and the Mountain Goat Railroad carried coal and passengers between the towns of Palmer (Grundy Co) and Cowan (Franklin Co). Between 1973 and 1983, the railroad was abandoned for transportation purposes and the rails, cross-ties and ballast stones were removed, however some wooden bridge structures remain intact.
