Metals and SVOCs were detected in soil samples above their respective NCDEQ Inactive Hazardous Sites Preliminary Soil Remediation Goals, Sept 2015, for residential, industrial and protection of groundwater soils. In addition, asbestos was detected throughout the building at greater than 1%, in accordance with the EPA definition of ACM.

The Phase II ESA found 32 locations with LBP greater than the EPA standard of 1.0 milligram of lead per square centimeter of substrate. Engineering controls could be implemented to control the health hazard associated with the LBP where material is not removed. In addition, metals and SVOCs were detected in soil samples above their respective NCDEQ levels for residential, industrial and for the protection of groundwater soils. Further, soil gas and indoor air samples contained VOCs at levels exceeding the NCDEQ Residential and Non-residential Sub-Slab and Exterior Soil Gas Screening Concentrations and NCDEQ DWM Residential and Non-Residential Indoor Air Screen Concentrations.

Additional Property Attributes

The site is the location of the former Jenkins Cleaners. which operated from approximately 1947 to 2007. Future use of the property is anticipated as commercial/retail development with the second floor continuing to remain residential.

Former Use: The site is located at 106 South 2nd Street in Pinetops, Edgecombe County, North Carolina. The site is the location of the former Jenkins Cleaners, which provided dry cleaning, laundry and alteration services from apporximately 1947 to 2007. The site is a .25 acre parcel with the building occupying nearly the entire .25 acres. The building is approximately a 1000 square foot, two story building with 500 sq feet of area on each of the two floors.
