The site is located in one of the City's Industrial Growth Zones, a new initiative designed to accelerate grown and development in Chicago's industrial sectors and bring jobs to the local residents and community. U.S. EPA has tasked Tetra Tech, Inc. through the START contract to perform a Phase I and II Environmental Site Assessment under Technical Directive Document TDD 0003/S05-0003-1705-005.

Former Use: The site was historically part of the Wisconsin Steel Company, dating back to 1913. The site was the area for former Mill #3 which manufactured steel and housed an oil dipping tank, furnaces, and a mill. A rail spur is on site. The building was demolished in 1998. Historical uses at the facility reportedly included the storage of lead based paints. In addition, the former building reportedly was constructed with asbestos-containing materials. The site has remained vacant with the concrete pads from the former structures still on site. Results of the Phase II Environmental Site Assessment indicate that soil remediation is necessary to remove total petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soil exceeding the soil attenuation capacity. Groundwater modeling indicated that compounds of concern will not potentially migrate off site. Damaged transite is on the ground at the site. Significant concrete foundations, infrastructure, piping, vaults and pits remain on site.
