Additional Property Attributes

The Site is irregular in shape and contains two occupied commercial structures. The remaining portions of the Site contain partially vegetated areas, and concrete slab foundations of former buildings. The Site is located in a mixed commercial, industrial, and residential neighborhood. The Site is bound by North King Street to the east, Iwilei Road to the south, a senior living community high-rise building to the west, and commercial properties to the north.

Former Use: The Site was utilized as a railway line and for the Honolulu Station Depot (currently the OR&L Building) from 1889 to 1962. The former railway line extended from Kaahi Street to the Iwilei Road and North King Street corner of the Site. Locomotives operating on the railway lines were fueled with coal, oil, diesel, or gasoline. Railway fueling operations were conducted on the property adjacent to the Site. An automotive service station was operated from the mid-1950s to the mid-1970s. During 1952 to 1999, a fruit and vegetable warehouse, with an adjacent storage building, was operated on the Site along the western boundary of the property. In 1999, the warehouse and the storage building were demolished. The OR&L Annex storage building (adjacent to the former automotive service station) has been located on the property from the 1950s to present. The property was conveyed by the OR&L to the State of Hawaii by deed on 11 September 1961. Portions of the Site have been leased to various commercial tenants (Harding Lawson Associates, 1992). Currently, the two OR&L buildings are used for State of Hawaii Offices or storage, and the rest of the property is unoccupied. Multiple Phase I and Phase II ESAs were performed for portions of the Site and the adjoining properties.
