Additional Property Attributes

The City of Gaston plans to reuse the site as an Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) accessible parking area for the adjacent Brown Park. The City has also considered constructing a permanent restroom, community center/interpretive center, and park/public works storage area on the site. Reuse options are also being considered for the structure on the subject site, but no firm plans have been developed in that regard.

Former Use: The site is generally located along the commercial corridor for Gaston, abutting an abandoned railroad right-of-way. Land use on adjacent properties includes Brown Park to the east, undeveloped vacant land to the south, and retail/commercial property to the west and north. Land use beyond these adjacent properties is primarily residential to the west, with Wapato Creek and the Tualatin Wildlife Refuge Wapato Lake located east/southeast of the site. On-site operations reportedly included a woodworking and milling shop that fabricated and performed minor finishing work on shingles, timbers, arches, and other similar wood products. The eastern portion of the property appears to have been used for storage of raw materials, as well as other equipment and goods, that on a generous read, only tangentially related to woodworking operations. Such stored items included discarded appliances, out of use vehicles, couches, household garbage, and trailers. This area was also used to both store and burn wood waste, including sawdust and other lumber scraps. This sawdust storage and burn pile may have extended off the subject property to the southern adjacent parcel. Historical uses of the subject property and building were reportedly used to store agricultural supplies, equipment, and seed.
