Former Use: Ownership: Atmautluak Limited Corporation / Atmautluak Traditional Council (surface) & Calista Regional Corporation (subsurface) The community dump pond is an open solid waste site. It is located on an apporx. 4.6 ac. parcel in and around a tundra pond on the east side of the Pitmiktalik River about 1.5 mi. N of Atmautluak and 1 mi. from the aircraft landing strip. The community dump pond has been used by the residents of Atmautluak since the 1960s as the primary village refuse disposal site. Waste from the village is typically placed on the ice in the center of the community dump pond during winter months and allowed to sink as the ice melts. An island of waste has formed within the center of the pond. During the summer months waste is segregated and, where appropriate, burned in one of the burn facilities located on the shoreline. The remaining waste accumulates along the shoreline of the dump pond. Current use is a continued solid waste disposal site.
