Additional Property Attributes

Soil is known to have been impacted from hexane releases over the approximate 23 year period that hexane was used onsite and from a release during the fire that ceased operations. Hexane was stored on-site in a large underground storage tank. Other fuel USTs were also in use at the site. Ground water is suspected to be affected by hexane and petroleum based constituents and will be investigated during Phase II ESA activities. However, current funding is not sufficient to complete the Phase II ESA so it has been put on hold until additional grant money can be obtained. It is anticipated that the Phase II will be completed as an EPA-Lead Targeted Brownfields Assessment. The City has also recently been awarded a BF Cleanup Grant to assist in site cleanup once the Phase II is complete.

Former Use: Site was developed prior to 1907 and operated from that time to 1983 as a cottonseed or soybean oil mill. Fertilizers were produced from the byproducts of the oil processing. From about 1959 or 1960 to 1983, oil was extracted using hexane. A catastrophic fire in 1983 engaged the hexane solvent extraction tower and destroyed multiple buildings at the site. The Fire Department confirmed hexane release to soil during the fire investigation.
