Additional Property Attributes

The subject property is located in a commercial and industrial area of North West DC and is currently used as a parking lot by Howard University. The site is chain-link fenced and access to it is through three unlocked and uncontrolled gates, two on the Sherman Ave/Florida Ave and one in the rear of the courtyard at 9th Street. A small brick/block abandoned two-story building sits in the east-central portion of the site on Florida Aveenue and the building is not accessible. The building is in a state of dispair, and peeling interior paint was observed . Evidence of a potential UST was observed at the rear of the building and what appeared to be a capped fill pipe material protrudes from the ground surface a few feet from the building wall. Two electrical transformers are located near the northwest corner of the site and appear to serve the adjacent Howard University dormitory building. The transformers are located within a fenced enclosure and supported by cement-filled steel bollards. A plumbing supply company- the Atlantic Plumbing Supply Co. is located adjacent to this site to the south of it and to the north is the Howard University dormitory which was constructed in 1988.

Former Use: The site is a 63,614 sq ft property owned by Howard University and is currently used as a parking lot. It was previously used for lumber storage and sales. There is a small abandoned two story brick structures used as office building located near the west central portion of the property and a two pad mounted electrical transformers located on the north west portion. The remaining portion of the property includes an asphalt paved parking lot and a perimeter chain-linked security fencing. The subject property has been used for various commercial and light industrial purposes since 1903. The primary historical use of the majority of the site was lumber storage and sales early 1920s-1970s. Other historical use of small portions of the site include coal storage in 1890s-1900s, various automotive activities wrecking company in the mid-1930s locksmith and auto sales in 1973 and body shop in 1978-1983. Cleaning and janitorial supply warehouse in 1954-1973, printing shop in 1954 and refuse service late in 1970s- early 1980s. When Howard University acquired the property in 1988, it was converted into a parking lot facilty. Based on available information, former occupants of the office building were primarily professionals lawyers, non-profit and/or social service organizations, and/or individuals.
