The Circle S Minimart, located at 495 Wadsworth is listed in both the Underground Storage Tank UST and Leaking Underground Storage Tank LUST databases. LUST Event ID No. 8772. A confirmed release was reported to the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment, Division of Oil and Public Safety OPS in October of 2001. In November 2001 the sites status was changed to active. Groundwater monitoring was initiated in January of 2004 and a Corrective Action Plan CAP was received in April 2005. The latest monitoring report received by the OPS was in November 2010 according to the COSTIS database. The status of soil contamination at the site is unknown. A review of the City of Lakewoods database pulled up a record of a methamphetamine laboratory meth lab at this location, however the City of Lakewood was unable to locate the files. The Circle S Minimart at 495 Wadsworth is considered a REC.

On March 4, 2011, MES interviewed Kyle Campbell, an Environmental Consultant from CGRS, Inc. CGRS. The remediation system located at 495 Wadsworth Boulevard was installed and is monitored by CGRS. Mr. Campbell indicated that the system chosen for this site is horizontal soil vapor extraction and water circulation with an oxygen diffuser. This system has been in operation since February of 2002. Mr. Campbell indicated that there is not now, nor has there ever been free product within the soil or groundwater.

According to Mr. Campbell, groundwater is approximately 12 feet below the surface. Mr. Campbell believes soil contamination to be minimal, following the large excavation to remove contamination done in conjunction with the tank install. Thus, the depth to contamination is approximately 12 feet to the water table. He indicated that the primary contaminant of concern is benzene. The highest level of benzene most recently reported is 49 micrograms per liter ug/L, nearly ten times the cleanup levels.

Mr. Campbell indicated that four consecutive, quarterly groundwater monitoring events must be below cleanup levels before CGRS will apply for NFA. It is unknown at this time how long the remediation will continue.
