Additional Property Attributes

This site has been redeveloped into the NE 72nd Avenue Community Garden and is currently owned by the City of Portland Parks and Recreation. The property was undeveloped and covered in grass. Although it was part of a former landfill, this portion of the property is understood to not have been part of the landfill cell. The landfill is listed in the Oregon DEQ Environmental Site Cleanup Information ECSI database as a suspect site, but this is common practice for all former landfills. Portland Parks and Recreation contacted the Brownfield Program for help in funding soil tests for this future community garden. In September 2011, as part of the Phase II Environmental Site Assessment, staff from the Brownfield Program involved several community members, both primarily Spanish speaking adults and children, in the soil sampling. Results from the soil tests did not reveal contamination associated with the adjoining landfill and the site was ready for redevelopment. The grand opening occurred in October 2012 but site improvements continue today with the plans to build an ecoroof for the information kiosk, add rain barrels and upgrade the rain garden. The community garden is intended to serve neighborhood residents.

Former Use: This property is a 0.68 acre portion of the former Killingworth Fast Disposal landfill and is located on the west side near the terminus of NE 72nd Avenue. Historical records indicate that this property was once part of an agricultural field, and starting in the 1940s was a residential property adjacent to a gravel mining facility. The property had been vacant since 1990.
