Additional Property Attributes

The MGP parcel was donated to the City of Richmond in 1978 for the goal of making a trail/park along the river. There is a conceptual plan for the park.

Former Use: The MGP operated from about 1855 until 1941. It is located in downtown Richmond on the edge of the Whitewater River Gorge, approximately 400 feet from the east bank. The Site is currently divided into two parcels separated by the abandoned Cincinnati and Ohio Railroad line. Indiana Gas Company Vectren owns the eastern parcel which historically contained the purifier building, an underground cistern, and one 320,000 cubic foot gas holder. The western parcel is owned by the City of Richmond and contained the building which housed the generator, coal retorts and coal storage, the coke house, and one known tar well. It also previously contained two gas holders. All buildings were demolished in late 2009 after a child was injured from a fall from the roof of the retort building. The Site is currently vacant and heavily vegetated. One tar well full of tar, cistern, and two subsurface brick tunnels with tar in the bottom running under the former MGP building footprint are still in-place. The contaminants of concern, including volatile organic compounds, semi-volatiles, and metals, identified on-Site in soil and groundwater during assessment activities are consistent with the historical MGP production conducted at the Site.
