Additional Property Attributes

The Butler Street Community Development Corporation (BSCDC) was working with a potential redeveloper of the former Butler Street YMCA in early 2016. BSCDC took ownership of the YMCA and adjacent Walden Building in 2013. Several influential Civil Rights leaders, including Martin Luther King, Jr., were members of this YMCA in their youth. Since the late 1800s, the site has been developed or surrounded by industrial and commercial businesses. A previous Phase I Environmental Site Assessment (ESA) identified possible hazardous substance and petroleum contamination at the site. To help the potential redevelopment, the City completed a Limited Phase II ESA and an Analysis of Brownfield Cleanup Alternatives (ABCA). With the information from the ESA and ABCA, the redevelopment project did not move forward. BSCDC stills owns and maintains the vacant 37,500 square foot building and the surrounding underutilized property.

Former Use: YMCA in the past now is vacant.
