Institutional and Engineering Controls

Asbestos abatement in onsite buildings, and metals contamination in soils/waste rock piles need to be addressed. Institutional Controls are likely to be necessary however, the environmetnal cleanup plan has not been completed as of yet and will likely occur during the construction season of 2012.

Additional Property Attributes

Based on Hinsdale County�s Application for State of Colorado Targeted Brownfields Assessment Assistance for this TBA, it is CDPHE�s understanding that the current owner of the property LKA International, Inc. intends to donate the footprint of the Townsite buildings and access between the structures to Hinsdale County for historic restoration, heritage tourism, economic development purposes and to reduce the mining site which includes a permitted area to specifically the mill area located to the south of Hinsdale County Road 20.

Former Use: The property is currently developed with the abandoned Townsite of the Ute-Ulay Mine and Mill site. The Townsite consists of the following buildings/structures that are in poor condition: One wooden outbuilding located south and adjacent to Hinsdale County Road HCR 20 near the southwest corner of the property, with the remaining property and buildings located on the north side of HCR 20 two additional wooden outbuildings are located near the northwest corner of the property along HCR 20 one metal outbuilding with an associated wooden vertical mine shaft a wooden water tank with two above-ground metal storage tanks believed to be approximately 4,000-gallons and 5,000-gallons in size and an associated water flume system to the mill of which the mill is not part of the property and is located on the south side of HCR 20 along Henson Creek a small wooden structure believed to be used as a potential fabrication shop a two-story hotel/boarding house two one-story individual homes and a wooden outhouse. A waste rock pile with cribbing that consists of approximately 1,500 cubic yards in volume is present to the north and adjacent to the hotel/boarding house structure on the property. Construction of the south adjacent mine and mill site was completed in 1874, with the majority of the Townsite buildings constructed in 1925.
