Additional Property Attributes

The decomishoned U.S. Army Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex (SRMSC) is comprised of five non-contiguous land parcels including the 432 acre Missile Launch Radar (MSR) site (located near Nekoma, ND) and associated Remote Sprint Missile Launch Sites Numbers 1-4 (No.1 (41 acres) located 11 miles W-SW of the MSR near Hampden, ND; No. 2 (36 acres) located 18 miles N-NW of the MSR near Langdon, ND; No.3 (43 acres) located 17 miles E of Langdon near Olga, ND; No.4 (49 acres) located 9 miles S-SW of the MSR and 9 miles from Adams, ND).

Former Use: The SRMSC consists of the main Missile Site Radar (MSR) property in Nekoma, Cavalier County and four separate Remote Sprint Launch (RSL) sites located within the agricultural landscape surrounding the MSR. Historical documents reviewed date back to 1944 and indicate that the subject sites were historically utilized for agricultural purposes until approximately 1969, when the U.S. Army acquired the properties for construction of the ABM complex. The Stanley R. Mickelsen Safeguard Complex became fully operational as the United States only ABM site in October, 1975 and was closed in December, 1975 following ratification of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks (SALT) between the United States and the Soviet Union. During operation, the SRMSC fielded 30 Spartan and 70 Sprint missiles armed with nuclear warheads. No missiles were ever fired from the SRMSC. Following closure of the facility, all nuclear weapons systems were removed and a contractor salvaged essentially all recoverable equipment and material within the numerous structures. Remaining refuse was removed from the building, leaving the buildings empty. Numerous primarily non-tactical structures have been removed from the MSR site since its closure. With the exception of one cast-in-place concrete tank at the MSR site, all known regulated tanks were removed from the sites. An Expanded Site Inspection and corrective actions were completed at the SRMSC in the early 2000s under the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation and Liability Act (CERCLA). A review of the FirstSearch database report identified the MSR and each RSL site as No Further Remedial Action Planned (NFRAP).
