Additional Property Attributes

The Cleveland Lakefront Nature Preserve (CLNP)-Dike 14 is a former confined disposal facility (CDF. The site, which operated from 1979-1999, held soils and sediments dredged from the Cuyahoga River and Cleveland Harbor deemed too hazardous to dump into the open waters of Lake Erie. It is currently a natural area with limited public use, with access controlled by the Dike 14 Environmental Education Collaborative, through an Access Agreement with the Cleveland Cuyahoga Port Authority. Since 1999, when dredged materials were no longer placed in Dike 14, the land has gone through succession growth changes. As the changes occurred, the 88-acre site became an active area for migrating birds. Bird watchers were astounded to observe increasing visits by 250 species of birds each year. In 2002, the National Audubon Society named Dike 14 an Important Bird Area. Today, the sand flats have been eliminated and the site is covered with vegetation, including forest cover, wet and dry meadows, and shrub vegetation. Much of the vegetation is invasive species; however, the site provides habitat for migrating birds, a variety of mammals, and many species of butterflies. A 5-acre former landfill area within the former Dike has been impacted with PAHs, lead and PCBs. Dredgings from the Cuyahoga River that were deemed acceptable for re-use, were utilized to build a 4-foot cap over the impacted area.
