Additional Property Attributes

Located on the south side of the 6300 block of NE Killingsworth Court, this site is comprised of nine(9) 0.05 acre residential lots in the Cully Neighborhood. These properties are currently owned by Habitat for Humanity and slated for housing in 2015. In the interim, Emmas Garden, a non-profit that supports local economies and equitable food systems in underserved neighborhoods, is interested in using these properties for a market garden. The market garden is intended to provide gardening skills, a source of income, and food security to local residents. Produce from the market garden will be sold from a stand at a neighboring park, farmers markets and local restaurants. The Phase I Environmental Site Assessment revealed that this property was once used for agricultural purposes and as a motorcycle race track. Also as stated in the Phase I ESA report, since the late-1940s the property adjacent to this site "housed a long-haul trucking company until the late-1960s, a truck body manufacturing business until the early-1990s, and an automotive service/repair shop in the mid-1990s/2000s, which went out of business in 2012". These former uses prompted a Phase II Environmental Site Assessment. During the Phase II ESA, the soil was tested for heavy metals, pesticides and petroleum derived products. The lab results came back with no detection of any contaminants of concern in the soil and this property can now be redeveloped. Assistance from the Brownfield Program helped identify potential contamination concerns associated with past uses; supported a non-profits mission to encourage food independence; supported urban agriculture and food equity; promoted safe gardening procedures on urban spaces; and helped bring additional goods and services to the neighborhood.

Former Use: According to the Phase I ESA, the "Property was undeveloped and used as pastureland from at least 1936 through the 1960s, in use as a motorcycle dirt track from the 1970s through the 1990s, and cultivated for hay from the 1990s until it was cleared/graded for the Helensview Heights residential development in 2007. It has remained an unoccupied, vacant grass lot since that time."
