Additional Property Attributes

The Lake Conestee dam is located approximately 750 feet west of Conestee Road on the outskirts of the small town of Conestee in Greenville County, South Carolina. The dam has an approximate north-south orientation across the Reedy River. Two apparent wastewater lagoons were constructed to stair-step down the slope along the face of the dam, with the dam forming the fourth wall of the lagoons. Bright orange and tan sediments have accumulated in small piles at 4-5 spots along the dam fae within the former lagoon areas. These piles are upstream translocated sediments that infiltrated through cracks in the dam (constructed without cement or grout between the stonework). The Foundations property includes small sections of three water filtration units (sand beds) at the dams southern terminus.

Former Use: Lake Conestee was created in 1812 when a wooden dam was built across the Reedy River The dam provided water and power to a paper mill, McBee Factory, at the base of the dam. In 1862, the factory converted to producing gray cotton cloth used in Confederate uniforms in the Civil War. Around 1892, the wooden dam was replaced with the cut-stone structure visible today. The textile mill continued to produce woven cotton cloth after the Civil War until the mid-1950s. From the mid-50s to the mid-70s, the mill switched to production of a tazlinized yarn (described as fluffy yarns used in craft products), and used a dyehouse operation. The mill then switched back to woven cotton and twill cloth for a few years until closing in 1978. The mill property has been used as a warehouse operation sporadically since 1978.
