Additional Property Attributes

The 0.6-acre Site is accessed via Park Street, which creates the southwestern Site boundary. The Black River, which flows southeast, creates the Site's northeastern boundary. The Site is improved with an approximately 47,000-square-foot mill building with three main floors, an attic, and a barn with a separate attic on the western end of the mill building. The remainder of the Site is paved.

The Site mill building was originally constructed in 1826 as a three-story wood-frame building. The mill building was remodeled and/or renovated in 1859, 1877, 1910, 1914, and 1922 as a part of the mill's expansion. The Parks & Woolson Machine Company, which manufactured textile finishing equipment, operated in the Site building from 1826 until it ceased operations in 2003. After Parks & Woolson's closure in 2003, the Site building was auctioned and was partially converted to a residential living space by the current owner in 2006. The Site building fell into disrepair since operations ceased and remains similar to present day.

During historical mill operations, the western end of the Site building was used as a store house, and the eastern end contained the machine shop, with the second floor of the machine shop being used for woodworking and setting up. Historical Sanborn Fire Insurance maps (1885 & 1894) depict two tanks in the machine shop: one 2,500-gallon tank in the attic above the machine shop of unknown contents and a second tank of unknown size, and contents in the machine shop. A tail race exits the Site building on the eastern corner into the Black River. Heat was provided by coal stoves, power by water, and lights with kerosene with transition to electric lights by 1894. By 1900, a dwelling was constructed at the Site just east of the mill building along Park Street, and by 1905, a blacksmith shop and stables were constructed adjoining the dwelling. By 1921, the blacksmith shop and stables were converted to auto garages and storage area.
