Additional Property Attributes

The site was the former location of a hotel. The USTs are believed to have been used to store heating oil for the hotel. The hotel was reported to have been constructed in the early 1900s and was demolished in the late 60s. The structure that currently occupies the associated site was constructed in 1971 and likely replaced the hotel. Since natural gas, which is currently used for heating, was available in 1971, the USTs are estimated to have been unused for at least the last 45 years.
The site is located in the downtown core of Sunnyside. The downtown has been targeted for significant revitalization efforts led by both the City and Port of Sunnyside. The property's central location with great pedestrian and vehicle accessibility would make it ideal for a local business or startup. In the past several years, there have been several proposals for repurposing the site as a restaurant, performing arts studio and a retail business, but environmental impacts have been a barrier to realizing these proposals. The findings of the Phase II ESA will support the Port's ability to make informed decisions regarding potential acquisition and redevelopment of the Site.
The Port of Sunnyside was awarded an Integrated Planning Grant from the Department of Ecology in late 2021. Grant funds will be used for cleanup planning and some redevelopment planning, with work scheduled to be completed June 30, 2023.
