Additional Property Attributes

This property is one half of what is known locally as the "Potee-Garrett" site. Prior to 1953, the majority of the property consisted of undeveloped marshland adjoining the eastern bank of the Patapsco River. Previous reports indicate that uncontrolled landfill activities on the property began in 1953 and continued until 1974. The former marshland area was filled with large quantities of construction debris, soil, wood, tires, glass, and municipal waste. After filling, the western and central portions of the properties were used as a junkyard for automobiles by Chernocks Junkyard. The junkyard operated from approximately 1956 to 1981. Sometime in the mid-1980s, the junked automobiles were removed and on-site business ceased. The property is currently undeveloped, but cleanup activities were undertaken to stabilize the site and to make it more appealing for future redevelopment. As part of the cleanup and stabilization of both parcels of the Potee-Garrett site, 127.53 tons of contaminated debris, 4.97 tons of tires, 14.89 tons of steel, and two 55-gallon drums were removed from the site. Additionally, six monitoring wells were abandoned and 2,997 linear feet of fence were installed around the perimeter. Work was completed under the supervision of the Maryland Department of the Environment and the agency now considers the site to be stabilized and secure.

Former Use: Baltimore City. Located along the Patapsco River, the property was wetlands until the 1950s. Beginning then, the wetlands were filled with constructions debris, household waste and soil.
