Additional Property Attributes

Now that contamination has been removed from the property, we have begun redevelopment of this abandoned catholic school building as a community center offering free and low-cost educational and college preparation courses for teenagers, and savings, homebuying and English courses for adults. The redevelopment will cost $2.6 million when complete, and the vast majority of it will be funded through private sector funding partners (at least 75%). This property sits at the heart of Lawrence's immigrant North Common Neighborhood - one of the poorest communities in MA - and has been abandoned and contaminated for 20 years before this work began. (PPF, 7/14/04)

Former Use: The property was a former Catholic church and school. The property includes approximately 0.3 acres of land, and includes a two-story brick building built in circa 1900. The property has been owned by the City of Lawrence since 2001. The building formerly used a 2,000-gallon fuel oil UST, which is now abandoned. The UST is located on the northwest side of the building. The UST was removed in May of 2006. 44.46 tons of soil with field screening results > 10 ppmv was removed from the UST grave and transported off-site for disposal. Post excavation sample results indicate that there is no petroleum impact to the property.
