Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The property is part of the Formerly Used Defense Site (FUDS) known as the Rosecrans Army Airfield and National Guard. The former tank farm property consisted of a fenced area approximately 300 x 135 ft. which housed as many as thirteen above ground storage tanks, two pumphouses, underground fuel lines and overhead fill pipes. During World War II the Department of Defense (DOD) established an Army Air Force Base there after acquiring 764.83 acres fee, 539.72 acres lease and 17.44 acres easement for operational training of Air Transport Command personnel. During this time (1941-1943) many improvements were made, including construction for the tank farm. The tank farm was used to house jet and diesel fuels. In 1948, the DOD relinquished jurisdiction of the airfield, including the tank farm property, to the City of St. Joseph by quitclaim deed; with the exception of 142 acres set aside for use by the Missouri Air National Guard (MoANG) 139th Air Wing (organized in 1946). The property is currently used for agricultural purposes. The city has plans to lease the property to the MoANG.
