Additional Property Attributes

Presence or perception of contamination on roadway and threat to surface water prevented essential ongoing economic activities from occurring on Iron Creek Road. Cleanup activities restored compromised area to full function.

Former Use: Iron Creek is a BIA-system road on CIR utilized by the public and commerce. On 9/18/2006 a fatal accident occurred on Iron Creek Road involving a subcontractor-owned water tender servicing commercial logging activities being conducted on CIR. The accident occurred on BIA right of way with Haz material being released to trust land of the CIR. Upon impact with a rock outcrop at Iron Creek, virtually all fluids associated with the water tender were released to the environment including -4000 gallons of water, diesel fuel, motor oil, antifreeze, and hydraulic fluid. At the point of release, Iron Creek was -10 of Iron Creek Road. Due to the types of Haz materials spilled, the volume of Haz materials, enhanced mobility due to simultaneous release of large quantity of water, and the spills immediate proximity to key spawning habitat for Red Band Trout, the release was judged by Don Hurst, Response Program Manager, to represent a substantial and imminent threat to the environment. Contaminated soil was removed from the road surface, drainage ditch, and banks of Iron Creek and replaced with noncontaminated fill. Due to the nature of the release, assessment and cleanup were integrated into a simple report.
