Additional Property Attributes

Property is also known as "Nutwood Place"; the 2.79 acres is located at the rear of 1412 North Main Street and does not include the Urbana Armory buildings or parking lots.

Former Use: The Property includes a 2.79 acre parcel of land located in the northern portion of the City of Urbana, Champaign County, Ohio. Most of the property is wooded. The Property is bounded by residences and farmland to the south, the Urbana Armory property to the east, and the Grimes Field Airport to the north and west. A north/south runway and service road/taxiway for the airport are located to the west. The remnant foundation of a former industrial building (the Durawood plastics factory) is situated adjacent to the western property boundary. In addition, a cistern with piping is located in the southwest portion of the Property. The property is currently vacant and owned by the City or Urbana. The City intends to maintain the property as a buffer zone (green space) between Grimes Field Airport and surrounding properties. Prior to the start of World War II the Property was farmland. The City of Urbana acquired the Property in 1941 and sold it to Urbana Industrial Buildings, Inc. in July 1956. Mr. Orsino H. Bosca purchased the Property during August 1956, and it was held by Bosca family marital trusts until purchased by the State of Ohio Adjutant Generals Department in 1995. The City of Urbana repurchased the Property in 2008. During the period between 1966 and 1976 the Durawood plastics factory was operated on the Property. The Durawood factory is listed in Urbana city directories from 1966 through 1971, and according to the Urbana Fire Department the factory was destroyed by fire in 1976. The Durawood plastic factory ceased operations at the Property sometime between 1971 and the date of the fire. The property was used by the Urbana Armory for military training for an unknown period of time between 1976 and 2008. According to the Ohio Adjutant Generals Department, with the exception of smoke grenades ammunition was not used during training, and neither hazardous materials nor petroleum products were ever used or stored on the Property.
