Additional Property Attributes

Former Use: The lumber storage area is located approximately 500 feet north of th Eel River on a nearly flat river terrace in the Eel River flood plain. A steep wooded hillside borders the subject parcels to the north and generally defines the extent of prior mill site activities. Rural residences are located east of the lumber storage area, and the remaining portion of the former mill site is located on parcels immediately west of the lumber storage area. The southern boundary of the lumber storage area is defined by the railroad, Northwestern Avenue, and Highway 101. The only structure building on the area is a former office building for the mill, which is currently being used for a residence. The structure is a two story building of typical woodframe construction. Mill A was used for agriculture until 1952 when it was first developed as a sawmill. Various owners operated the site as a lumber mill until 2005 when the lumber mill operations were closed. Site acativities included treating lumber, incineration of woodwaste, and storage of petroleum fuels in underground and avove-graound storage tanks. Much of the milling, wood treatment, and waste incineration took place on parcels immediately to the west of the lumber storage area. Current uses of the adjoining properties to the west of the lumber storage area include a redwood burl artist shop, and storage and offices for Empire Roofing Company. A small woodwaste landfill is located on the property. The woodwaste disposed in the landfill originated at the lumber mill.
