Additional Property Attributes

Former unlined landfill on approximately 6.0 acres, closed and capped in early 1970s. Adjacent to Columbia River. Washington State Dept of Ecology Integrated Planning Grant (IPG) focused on 3.3 acres to identify potential options for reuse of the Public Works Department property and surrounding area.

Former Use: Six-acre former municipal landfill operated on the Columbia River waterfront from 1952 to early 1970s in Wenatchee, an agricultural community in central Washington. Site is within walking distance of Citys historic downtown core. Site was closed and capped in 1970s. City adopted Waterfront Subarea Plan in 2004. City relocated their Public Works building from site in 2008 or 2009 [depends on source]. Between 2008 and 2010, City explored options to redevelop waterfront at portions of site not underlain by the landfill, including hotel, public market, mixed-use development and small boat moorage. Partnerships evolved between the City, Port of Chelan County, and private developer River Park Plaza, LLC, to purchase a former metal fabrication warehouse near the site. In a public-private partnership, the City, the Port, and the Walker Charitable Foundation transformed industrial warehouse into Pybus Public Market, which opened May 2013. Additional development plans are currently underway, including mixed-use buildings, medium-rental housing, and boutique hotel.
