Additional Property Attributes

The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center is currently operating as a vibrant, well-attended public recreational facility. The immediate plans include the creation of a small playground in the northern portion of the property. The EMHRC would also like to pursue the construction of a galleria 2-story, glassed structure that would serve as the joining building between the existing rec center and the moth-balled Foundry building. The long range plan is for the Foundry, one PCB investiagation and remediation has taken place, is for additional fitness class space, upper level walking track, locker rooms, and indoor gym space. A draft Phase II submitted 7.20.10 is currently being reviewed by VT DEC. Redevelopment plans and timeline will hinge upon the outcome of several factors including funding opportunities and cleanup costs.

Former Use: The Edgar May Health and Recreation Center EMHRC is located on Clinton St, directly adjacent to J&L and the Black River. The site currently consists of two buildings, one is in full operation as a fitness facility, icluding indoor pool, weight room, lockers, admin offices, and therapeutic pool. The other building is the former Foundry, which is locked with limited access and function due to the unknown presense of contaminants, such as PCB's. The northern portion of the property proposed use is as a playground area and the piece between the two buildings will consist of a 2-story, glass galleria for grand entrance, art space, and additional fitness area. The plant was formerly used for finishing grinding, smoothing, and painting cast parts prior to shipping to machine shops. The Foundry was constructed between 1910 and 1921.
