Additional Property Attributes

In 2000, illegal dumping of pesticides and battery casings were discovered at the Mabel Davis Park. As a result, various governmental entitities worked to reuse this park. The project included rebuilding the creek, putting a 30-inch cap over the closed landfill areas and the removal of battery castings, which were picked up by hand, filling ten 55-gallon drums. The city also addressed erosion problems in the nearby spring-fed creek. The park was re-opened in Decemeber 2005 with an additional 25 acres and a skate board park. Mabel Davis is a success story and an asset to the commmunity for generations to come. (PPF - Mabel Davis Park, 1/31/06). The Mable Davis Park Project addressed chronic illegal dumping problems and improved the park amenities to include a skateboarding facility, additional free play area, wildflower section and repair to erosion problems in the nearby spring fed creek (PPF - Mabel Davis Park, 5/22/09).

Former Use: Mable Davis property was a gravel quarry until 1944. After that, the property operated as a 25-acre landfill until the mid 1950s. In 1972 the City purchased the property to use as a park which was completed in 1979. A second remediation project was needed when erosion and pesticides were found on the property. The remediation was completed in November, 2005. The park was reopened with the addition of a skate board facility, open free play area, walking trails, and an additional 25 acres of green space.
