Additional Property Attributes

The site is comprised of 6 patented mining claims equal to 99.76 acres and was acquired by the Tohono O'odham Nation in 2009. Observed in the vacinity are two endangered species: the Sonoran Proghorn and the Nichol's Turk's Head Cactus. Primary Contaminates of Concern are arsenic, cadmium, lead, and mercury, with a potential for cyanide. The site has at least one unsecured mine shaft.

Former Use: Silver was mined from Vekol Mine off and on between 1882 to 1916. In 1966 the Duval Corp leased-optioned the mine, but never exercized the option. Sunburst Mining Co began a pad-leaching operation for about 2 years, starting in 1977. Pinal County assessor document 2004-014064 shows that Craig & Vickilyn VanSickle became the site owners, and, shortly thereafter bulldozed through saguaros, an archeaological site and endangered species Nichols Turk's Head cacti on Tohono O'odham Nation lands. The site comprised of 6 patented mining claims was acquired by the Tohono O'odham Nation via title transfer in January 2009.
