Additional Property Attributes

Benzoaanthracene, and other VOCs and SVOCs were detected in three areas of stained soil on the Tongue River Lumber Facility property. However, the detection levels for these substances were below EPA regional industrial screening level benchmarks. The Phase II ESA report recommends removing the stained soil from the site. However, various options exist for dealing with the stained soil on the property dependent upon the future reuse of the property.

Former Use: This 32.18 acre property located in Ashland, Montana, is owned by the Northern Cheyenne Tribe. Prior to 1953, the landuse reported for the property was agricultural/pastoral. From 1953 to around 2001 the property was used as a sawmill. Around 1970, the tribe purchased the property from St. Labre Catholic Church which was operting a lumber mill at the site. The tribe hired outside managment to run the the Tongue River Lumber Company until about 2001. After 2001, the lumber company no longer operated. The property is fenced and gated. Presently, there are several structures on the property that are mainly used as storage. One building is currently used by the Tribe's Emergency Response/Disaster Relief team for sand bagging operations.
