Additional Property Attributes

The property is tribal trust land located on the Crow Creek Reservation in the Big Bend Area. This 3-acre property contains 3 structures. A former convenience store (now vandalized and salvaged), a former community center building (now burned to the ground), and a former Boys and Girls club (now partially burned and salvaged). All three structures were built on cement slabs. The convenience store and Boys and Girls Club were metal-steel and aluminum structures. The Community Center was built of combustible materials. The Crow Creek Sioux Tribe intends to redevelop the property as either new housing or as commercial property. The Phase II found asbestos containing material in all three buildings as well as in the area surrounding the burnt-down community center. The Phase II also identified fluorescent light ballasts with no labeling. As a result, the light ballasts are assumed to contain PCBs. See the Phase II Environmental Site Assessment for further detail. EPA completed a time critical removal at the site on 8/7/2013 which included removing soil with asbestos, demolishing the buildings and properly disposing of asbestos containing materials and light ballasts.

Former Use: The property is Tribal Trust Land that was acquired by the tribe in 1932. There is indication of a school that may have been located on the property in 1966. The three structures were built sometime in 1970s. The structures were used as a convenience store, community center, and boys and girls club. The boys and girls club is reported to have originally been used as a firehouse. Two of the structures were burned, vandalized, and scavenged. The two structures that are still standing are vacant and are not currently being used. See the Phase I for further information. EPA completed a time critical removal at the site on 8/7/2013 which included removing soil with asbestos, demolishing the buildings and properly disposing of asbestos containing materials and light ballasts.
